Teardown · Calendly
Calendly: the users do the marketing
Every booking link is an advert for the product, shown to exactly the people who schedule meetings.

- I use it for
- Mentoring calls
- Found
- Testing my own site
What it gets right
- The person booking never needs an account. They pick a time and they are done.
- One link replaces the email thread. The value is obvious the first time you use it.
- Every booking page carries the Calendly name, so each meeting introduces the product to someone new.
- It embeds. The booking page sits inside my own site, so visitors never leave.
Where I hit a dead end
The booking link on my own site stopped working, and I did not notice. The old address showed a page saying the URL was not valid.
My profile was still live and had a working event. The error page did not point to it, so every visitor who clicked "Book a call" met a dead end.
Nothing told me. I found out only when I tested my own site.
What I would test
- On a dead event link, show the owner's other live events instead of an error.
- Email the owner when a link that used to get visits starts returning errors.
- Keep old addresses working as redirects when an event is renamed.
What to take from it
- Put your product in front of your users' contacts, and let them try it without signing up.
- Links are promises. If your product hands out URLs, a broken one is your failure, not the user's.
- Test your own funnel as a stranger would. I had not, and visitors were meeting a dead end.
My own view as a user and a product manager. I have no inside knowledge of how Calendly works or decides.
